Wilson has been a major player in sports equipment for a long time and continues to be a leader in basketballs and basketball related products.  If you watch many college basketball games then you will quickly realize just how often Wilson basketballs are utilized in some of the highest level games.  Out of all the basketball brands we’ve tested we would say that Wilson has the most consistent styling and performance between basketball models.  So, if you like one Wilson you will probably like all of the basketballs they offer for sale.

Let’s get into what the Wilson Evolution Indoor Basketball is all about.  The first thing to note is that this basketball has met the quality standards to be NFHS approved.  This means that this basketball is approved for game play at the high school level.  In fact, the Evolution is the top selling game basketball for high schools around the country.  What really makes the Wilson Evolution stand out from the competition is the cushioned grip.  While most indoor basketballs have a superior grip to their indoor/outdoor counterparts, the Wilson Evolution takes grip to a new level.  The ball fits so naturally in your hands as the cover is exceptionally soft.  Because of this the Wilson Evolution is extremely easy to handle when dribbled and feels smooth when catching passes.

Often when you have a basketball with such a soft cover the consequence is a more inconsistent bounce.  With the Wilson Evolution Indoor Basketball this simply is not the case.  This basketball dribbles extremely true and you can feel confident that the basketball will play reliably so that you can focus on finding an open man for a no look dish.  Be sure to watch the video we created above so that you can hear how the basketball sounds coming off the floor and to see how it performs.

As for feel the Wilson Evolution felt lighter than most other basketballs we’ve tried.  Some players like a lighter ball because it extends their shooting range, while others say that a slightly heavier basketball improves the overall feel and responsiveness of the basketball.  The Wilson Evolution will be better suited for the former.

The channel design of the Wilson Evolution Basketball is worth discussing.  Most channels are made of rubber and are smooth to the touch.  Wilson has changed this up on their indoor basketballs and the channels actually are themselves made of a pebbled composite leather material similar to the outer cover.  I was unsure how I would feel about this design, but found that I liked it as it further enhanced the grip compared to the traditional channel material.  True to a typical Wilson basketball the channel design is extra wide and deep.  Whether of not you like extra wide channels is a matter of personal preference.

The Wilson Evolution Basketball is very reasonably priced as far as indoor basketballs go.  We picked up this basketball on Amazon for right around $48 (see current price).  Often, indoor basketballs are $50+, with the most expensive being the official NBA game basketball coming in between $130-$150.  So, compared to many other indoor basketballs, the Wilson Evolution is one of the best values out there if you want a high quality basketball made exclusively for indoor game play.

Overall, we do not feel like you can go wrong with the Wilson Evolution Indoor Basketball.

  • Outstanding value for a game ready indoor basketball
  • The Cushion Core technology is second to none and is super soft
  • Pebbled channels improve the overall grip of the basketball
  • The bounce on the basketball is true.  We have NEVER experienced a weird or inconsistent dribble from the Wilson Evolution

  • With such a soft cover it may not be the most durable basketball (we will update on this when we get more wear out of the basketball)
  • Players looking for a basketball with a genuine leather feel will not like the ultra cushioned cover

It is no wonder the Wilson continues to be used by so many basketball organizations as there is no doubt it makes one of the best premium basketballs available.  The Wilson Evolution excels in several areas related to cushion, bounce, value, and feel.  If you have an indoor league or competitive pickup games and are looking for a new basketball the Wilson Evolution will meet your needs quite nicely.
